FAQS
How do I sign up?
You don’t have to. You don’t even have to be Slytherin.
You don’t have to apply to become Serpentimes staff in order to write. That is an option, however, if you’d like to dive in and commit to writing regularly (such as for a column), or simply want to help out with the editing.
But for the most part, you only have to write something, email it to us, and we’ll take care of the rest!
What do I get out of this?
Submitting not only gives you the warm fuzzy feeling of seeing your work published online, but you also get POINTS out of it!
You will receive 10 points per submission, with some limitations.
There is a maximum earning potential of 20 points for articles, and 20 points for graphics. Per month.
So, you can earn up to 40 points per month! Not bad at all!
Keep in mind that points are not awarded until the first week of the FOLLOWING month. All points will be awarded at once. Submitting earlier in the month is no different than submitting last minute.
When’s the deadline?
Due to failed attempts in the past to keep up with a monthly newspaper, we’re going to attempt a new approach. News is constantly happening, so we’ll be constantly updating. You can send in submissions at any time, and it’ll be published as soon as it’s edited and approved. You can still only earn 40 points per calendar month, but you can send things in any time during the month.
What do I write about?
Anything and everything!
Articles on events around the wizarding community, how-to guides, reviews of your favorite movies, classified ads, puzzles, stories, poetry, rants, recipes.
Think your topic might already be taken? (Especially for holiday/event themed articles) Email us first at ideas@serpentimes.org! We’ll save your place– It’s first come, first serve. But not necessarily first written.
How long does my article have to be?
Make it as long as it has to be. It can be two short sentences for a classified ad, just a paragraph or two about an upcoming HOL contest, or a full length story about your trip to Durmstrang. Just make sure the length fits the content.
What if I want to run a column?
Have a great idea for a column? Have the commitment to publish somewhat regularly? Email us the idea! We’d be happy to run some regular content and even advertise your column via advertisements.
What if I’m not a writer?
That’s okay! We’ll accept artwork, photos, advertisements, and other graphics. If you want your own post showcasing your art, just send it in! Alternatively, you can also send in advertisements for the sidebar.
How big can my images be?
If you’re making an advertisement, it should be no wider than 220, and no taller than 500 pixels.
If you’re just sending art or photos to showcase, it can be as big as you want, no worries about resizing. But we’ll be linking to it with a thumbnail of your art, so it’ll show on the site at roughly 300 wide before people click on it.
